  See how to use InterSystems IRIS® for Health or HealthShare® Health Connect to transform data in standard healthcare data formats—such as HL7® V2 and C-CDA—into the HL7® FHIR® format, a commonly used standard for data exchange across healthcare systems. Then, learn how to use InterSystems ObjectScript to manipulate FHIR data using dynamic objects. In a hands-on exercise, complete the setup of a production to transform HL7 V2 resources into the FHIR format.

  In this course, you learned how to convert data between the FHIR standard and SDA, an extensible XML-based messaging format. InterSystems IRIS for Health comes with prebuilt transformations between SDA and common healthcare messaging formats, so converting to SDA is a good general approach for healthcare interoperability.

  Prebuilt transformations can fit in multiple places within your instance of InterSystems IRIS for Health. If using your instance as a FHIR Resource Repository, you will likely need to transform incoming data, and potentially outgoing data as well. If you are using your instance as a FHIR Facade, you will primarily transform data into the FHIR format so that it can be forwarded to an upstream system.

  Dynamic objects are another tool that can be used to work with FHIR Resources in InterSystems IRIS for Health. Dynamic objects can be used when creating or editing a FHIR Resource, or when building utility methods for custom data transformations. This method of working with FHIR in InterSystems products requires coding knowledge, and extensive knowledge of the FHIR specification.
