  In this course, you learned how FHIR, as a standard for healthcare data, inherited the best qualities from HL7 V2, HL7 V3, and CDA. You also learned about the general architecture of FHIR and tools available within InterSystems IRIS for Health that allow you to build FHIR applications quickly.

  • From HL7 V2, FHIR inherited its extensibility and the ability to handle events-based messages.
  • From HL7 V3 and CDA, it inherited its flexible structure.

  FHIR combines all of these features and provides the ability to use messages, documents, REST, and services with the same core data, plus the ability to retrieve data from existing applications in the way that is needed while keeping cost and time down for implementations.
