  • Welcome to Learn InterSystems IRIS™ Data Platform

Interested in learning more about InterSystems IRIS Data Platform, but not sure where to start? We have a number of resources available for you!

    • InterSystems IRIS Data Platform is a complete platform, built around a high-performance database, that enables the rapid development and deployment of data-rich and mission-critical applications. It supports native interoperability for handling all types of data — big, small, structured, unstructured, centralized, decentralized, historical, and real-time.

It comes with the following key capabilities:

      • InterSystems IRIS: Database — A multi-model, multi-workload database; includes InterSystems SQL and InterSystems ObjectScript
      • InterSystems IRIS: Interoperability — A platform that provides application integration and interoperability, as well as data integration and interoperability
      • InterSystems IRIS: Analytics — An open analytics platform that enables users to leverage embedded technologies for business intelligence and text analytics, or best-of-breed third-party tools through dedicated connectors and industry standards
      • InterSystems Cloud Manager — A tool used to define infrastructures and configure InterSystems products in a private or public cloud
      • InterSystems Atelier — A tool based on the open-source development platform Eclipse; used to develop applications built on InterSystems products

While you will recognize many of the key features and capabilities that have been supported by Caché and Ensemble in the past, it is in fact a completely new product with important capabilities beyond those earlier products.

    • InterSystems Cloud Manager (or ICM) allows you to easily provision and deploy InterSystems IRIS Data Platform in the cloud, publicly or privately.

    • InterSystems IRIS Data Platform supports both horizontal and vertical scalability. Workloads are becoming more demanding in terms of data volume, throughput, and variability. A data platform can no longer just offer support by scaling up through redeployment on bigger hardware, but should enable transparently scaling out as well.

Beyond the excellent vertical scalability InterSystems products have always provided, InterSystems IRIS adds capabilities for scaling your system horizontally, addressing compute and storage requirements individually.

    • InterSystems IRIS Data Platform supports greater interoperability for programmers including:

      • Shared Memory Connection Mode — Provides a faster, alternative communication mode to TCP/IP, which can replace existing, deprecated, or removed in-process communications. It is available for Java and requires that the JVM and InterSystems IRIS are on the same machine.
      • DBNative — Provides consistent, direct access to globals. It integrates with existing client APIs for JDBC.
      • Java Business Hosts — Allows for business services and business operations to be implemented directly in Java by implementing predefined Java interfaces supplied by InterSystems IRIS. Configuration can then simply be performed within a production.
      • Fast Data Transfer — Allows clients that communicate using JDBC to send and receive data with InterSystems IRIS faster. To receive this benefit, simply use JDBC; the rest is handled automatically!

    • InterSystems IRIS Data Platform provides features that allow you to interoperate such as:

      • Managed File Transfer (mFT) — Allows you to securely transfer files. mFT categorizes products that enable secure file transfer between different systems. It usually manages credentials, schedules planned transfers, and operates on multiple protocols like HTTPS, FTP/S, SFTP, and others. All file operations are audited, and you can generate detailed reports for user and file activity. Transferred files are checked for accuracy and transmissions are automatically retried when they have been marked as failed. There is also a special category of mFT that deals specifically with high-speed transmissions for large files.
      • API Management — Provides a solid experience building and consuming REST APIs within InterSystems IRIS. It provides a comprehensive way to discover and document the capabilities of a REST API implemented by subclassing %CSP.REST.

    • InterSystems IRIS Data Platform acts as an open analytics platform, allowing users to leverage the tools they know and like through support for industry standards and dedicated connectors for market-leading analytics technologies. This comes on top of embedded technologies for business intelligence and text analytics.

As part of this strategy, InterSystems IRIS comes with a connector for Apache Spark™, the most popular software for fast and large-scale data processing in distributed architectures. The InterSystems IRIS Apache Spark Connector allows Apache Spark™ users to transparently leverage the computing power of the underlying data source when working with data stored in the InterSystems IRIS database.
